How Missed Connection Works
Missing a connecting flight or cruise departure is both inconvenient and extremely frustrating. The Missed Connection benefit can help cover the costs it takes to get caught up with your trip.
It is especially important to read your plan documents. Read the exclusions to understand what will disqualify travelers from Missed Connection benefits.
How Missed Connection Pays
You can be reimbursed for additional transportation costs to join your trip. Also, your prepaid expenses for the unused land or water travel arrangements can be reimbursed. The maximum benefit amount is $2,500 but varies by plan. Be sure to check your policy and compare plans to see which coverage is best suited to your needs. Most importantly, be sure to keep all receipts and documentation for the claims department.
Reasons for Missed Connection
Unfortunately, sleeping in is not a reason to miss your trip departure. Luckily, things like bad natural disasters are. If you miss your trip departure by 3 hours or more, because of the following, you qualify for the Missed Connection benefit.
Delay of Common Carrier
Airlines and cruise lines will sometimes experience delays. This can be inconvenient for those who are connecting to their trip departure. If the delay is certified by the common carrier, you can qualify for Missed Connection.
Documented Weather Conditions or Natural Disasters
Snowstorms, natural disasters, and heavy rain can cause travel delays. When documented weather conditions or natural disasters cause you to miss your trip departure because you were delayed 3 hours or more, you can qualify for the Missed Connection benefit.
Terrorism and Hijacking
If a terrorist incident or hijacking occurs and it keeps you from departing for your trip, then Missed Connection can help you get back on track.
Most commonly seen in movies like E.T., quarantine only happens in extreme circumstances, but it has happened. We have seen it happen to travelers exposed to areas of Ebola and Zika outbreaks. If you are quarantined and it causes you to miss your trip departure by 3 hours or more, you can qualify for Missed Connection.
